## Who they are

Morris is the 'weaker brother of the order,' his kindly face haggard with a secret that is 'burning the life out of me.' He comes to McMurdo because he trusts him, and lays out the news that Birdy Edwards of the Pinkertons is hunting the Scowrers — knowing that telling it means murder and hiding it may mean ruin. His agonized indecision forces McMurdo to seize the initiative, and his guilt shadows the violence that follows.
