Chapter 1
The Tragedy of Birlstone

This chapter provides a detailed description of Birlstone village and the ancient Manor House, home to John Douglas and his wife. Douglas, a wealthy man with a past in America, is well-liked in the community for his generosity and courage. His wife is beautiful but reserved, and there are hints of tension regarding Douglas's past. Cecil Barker, a friend from America, is a frequent visitor. The chapter culminates in the murder of John Douglas, discovered by Barker, who alerts the police.
