**Role:** major

**Also known as:** George Fentiman, Captain George Fentiman, George, Captain George, Fentiman

**First appearance:** 0001-i-old-mossy-face

## Snapshot

A war-damaged veteran haunted by debt and a moneylender's threats, George Fentiman is the grandson whose desperation makes him the investigation's most pitiable suspect.

## Who they are

George returns from the war with shattered nerves and a wife, Sheila, who struggles to keep their household together on too little money. He owes Dougal MacStewart two thousand pounds, and his grandfather's death would free him from that pressure, a motive that puts him squarely in the police's sights. His unguarded remarks at the club and his later confused surrender to authorities make him both a suspect and a figure of genuine pathos.
