  3. Chapter 3

    Scene I

    Theseus's wedding procession to the temple is interrupted by three queens who plead for his help against Creon, who refuses to allow their slain husbands proper burial. Despite his initial reluctance due to his marriage, Theseus is moved by their plight and agrees to postpone the wedding festivities to lead a war against Creon. Hippolyta and Emilia also advocate for the queens, and Theseus commands Artesius to raise forces while he proceeds with the marriage ceremony before departing.

  4. Chapter 4

    Scene II

    Palamon and Arcite discuss the corrupt state of Thebes under Creon's tyranny and decide to leave the city to preserve their honor. Valerius arrives with news that Theseus has declared war on Thebes. The cousins resolve to fight for Thebes despite their disdain for Creon, accepting their fate.

    Scene III

    Pirithous, Hippolyta, and Emilia exchange farewells before the gates of Athens as Pirithous departs to join Theseus in war. Hippolyta and Emilia discuss the deep bond between Pirithous and Theseus, and Emilia recalls her childhood friendship with Flavina, asserting that the pure love between maidens can surpass romantic love. Hippolyta gently challenges Emilia's conviction but affirms her own devotion to Theseus.
