Chapter 2
Scene I
Valentine prepares to leave Verona for Milan, urging Proteus to join him in seeking worldly experience, but Proteus is too consumed by his love for Julia to accompany him. After Valentine departs, Proteus confesses that love has transformed him, neglecting his studies and friends. Speed arrives and delivers a letter to Julia on Proteus' behalf, but reports that she gave no encouraging response, leaving Proteus anxious about his romantic prospects.
Chapter 3
Scene II
In the garden of Julia's house, Julia and her maid Lucetta discuss the merits of various suitors, with Lucetta hinting that Proteus is the best match. After Julia feigns disinterest, Lucetta reveals a letter from Proteus. Julia initially scolds her but secretly longs to read it, eventually tearing it up in frustration before tenderly kissing the fragments. The scene ends with Lucetta calling Julia to dinner.
