Miriam reflects on her new freedom in London, earning her own living, and the contrast between her inner life and the social performances expected of her. During a Sunday afternoon with Gerald and Harriett, Mr. Tremayne visits and his conversation oppresses her, revealing the limited roles available to women. She plays Mendelssohn and later Beethoven, sensing Mr. Tremayne's adoration and the trap of becoming the 'ideal wife.' Afterward, walking home, she feels the raw reality of the streets and writes to Alma, seeking connection. The chapter ends with a playful yet tense scene between Gerald and Harriett, and Miriam's announcement of her change of lodgings.
Chapter 5

Miriam struggles with the repetitive drudgery of cleaning dental instruments at Wimpole Street, questioning the meaning and purpose of such work. She observes Mr. Hancock's unique sensitivity toward patients and his appreciation of beauty, exemplified when they examine a new Oriental plaque. The plaque breaks, but their shared aesthetic moment deepens her admiration. Later, during tea, she endures the vulgarity of Mr. Leyton and finds relief in the warm, cultured company of the Orlys.
