# The Doctor — The Truth About Tristrem Varick character guide

> The Doctor in The Truth About Tristrem Varick by Edgar Saltus.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0004-ii

## Snapshot

The medical man whose professional judgment hovers over the question everyone asks about Tristrem, whether a mind like his can be called sound.

## Who they are

In a story where the newspaper public and the world agree on exactly one theory, that Tristrem Varick was insane, the doctor's verdict carries weight. The narrator insists Tristrem was not insane, only possessed of a fibre more or a fibre less than ordinary men, and the doctor stands as the figure who might confirm or complicate that claim. His presence turns the central question of the book into something diagnosable, a matter of nerves and inheritance rather than mere gossip.
