## Who they are

The priest meets K. in the empty cathedral, summoned or sent for in a way neither of them quite clarifies, and speaks with the calm of someone who has watched many defendants arrive at the same questions. He offers K. a story about a man who waits his whole life at a door meant only for him, then declines to resolve it, insisting that interpretation is not the same as instruction. He matters because he is the closest thing to a guide K. ever gets — and the least willing to pretend the court can be understood.
