A grain merchant who has been a client of Lawyer Huld for over five years, and who knows the court's private machinery better than any defendant should.

## Who they are

Block buys and sells cereals, and he has spent more than five years entangled in a trial he never fully explains, retaining Huld and studying the court's back channels with the patience of a man who has learned to wait. He is deferential to the lawyer to the point of self-abasement, yet he lectures K. with hard-won expertise about which contacts matter and which favors are traps. He matters because he is a mirror: a defendant further along the same road, showing K. what accommodation with the court can cost a man.
