The Good Schoolmaster
The chapter introduces Jabez North, a foundling rescued from the Sloshy river and raised by the town of Slopperton. Now an assistant schoolmaster at Dr. Tappenden's academy, he is outwardly pious and meek, but the narrative hints at hidden depths and a secret coil of rope in his desk. The chapter also paints a grim picture of a rainy November day, suggesting the influence of weather on the human mind.
Chapter 3
Good for Nothing
On a dark November night, Richard Marwood returns to his mother's home, the Black Mill, after seven years of dissipation. He is welcomed by his mother and his wealthy uncle, Montague Harding, who offers him a chance at redemption: a position as a merchant's clerk and the promise of an inheritance. Richard accepts, full of hope for the future.
Chapter 4
The Usher Washes His Hands
Jabez North, the usher at Dr. Tappenden's school, prepares a rope and climbs out of his window in the middle of the night while a sick boy is delirious in his room. He returns three hours later, frustrated and with a dark stain on his hand. The boy becomes frightened, and Jabez forces him to drink opium, causing his death. Jabez then washes his hands in a bizarre ritual, drinking the bloody water, and later reports the boy's death to Dr. Tappenden.
Chapter 5
IV: Richard Marwood Lights His Pipe
Richard Marwood, known as Daredevil Dick, leaves his mother's house early in the morning, lights his pipe, and heads to the Slopperton railway station. He travels to Gardenford, where he is arrested by Mr. Jinks and a silent companion on suspicion of murdering his uncle, Montague Harding. Richard is handcuffed and taken back to Slopperton for an inquest, protesting his innocence and expressing bewilderment.
