## Who they are

Applegate is a stamp-collecting eccentric who hires Fenton Hardy after a thief cracks his tower safe, then swings between smug disbelief and eager cooperation as the boys press their theories. Quick-tempered and easily swayed, he first scoffs at the search of the old tower, then insists on helping ransack the new one, and he's quick to blame his fired handyman Robinson. His reward money and shifting moods keep the case in play and give the Hardy boys their central client.
