Schryhart is broad-shouldered, black-eyed, and used to ruling any enterprise he enters; he prefers to own the table rather than share it. When he summons Cowperwood to discuss combining the old gas companies, he assumes the younger man will fall in line, but Cowperwood's bland refusal to be patronized exposes the rivalry that will define Chicago finance. His wealth, his paper, and his pride make him the natural leader of the old-money faction that treats the interloper as a threat to be broken.
