Chapter 1
I
Ross Murdock, a young man with a criminal record, is recruited by Major Kelgarries for a mysterious government project. After being volunteered by Judge Rawle, Ross is taken by helicopter and then a futuristic aircraft to a secret arctic base. He undergoes physical and psychological tests, and is confined to a cell-like room. Through a hidden speaker, he experiences a vivid sensory projection of a wilderness scene, hinting at the nature of the project. Ross resolves to play along and gather information, believing his skills and knowledge give him an edge.

II
Ross Murdock observes a complex war game played by Hodaki, Jansen, and Ashe, then explores the base and meets diverse personnel including Feng, Van Wyke, and Kurt Vogel. After a sudden blackout, he discovers a bandaged man named Hardy crawling in the dark, and Major Kelgarries arrives to help.
Chapter 3

Ross Murdock, having been recruited into a secret Arctic base, is approached by Kurt Vogel who convinces him to escape before being 'taped' and sent on a dangerous time travel mission. Ross agrees, and together they navigate minefields and security to steal a snow cat and flee into the polar night.
Chapter 4
IV
Ross Murdock, having been recaptured after his escape attempt with Kurt Vogel, is given a second chance by Major Kelgarries and Ashe. He learns that the time travel technology described by Kurt is real, and he is offered a trial run to Bronze Age Britain as his graduation exercise. Ross accepts, and the chapter details his training in primitive skills, languages, and customs, as well as his growing respect for Ashe.
Chapter 5
V
Ross and Ashe, disguised as Beaker traders, travel to Bronze Age Britain via a time transition and a disguised submarine. They discover Outpost Gog has been destroyed by an explosion, likely by Red agents. They investigate the ruins and head to Nodren's village to seek answers, with Ashe using his trader alias Assha.
