Chapter 1
Author's Preface
The author describes discovering the Memoirs of M. d'Artagnan in the Royal Library while researching his History of Louis XIV, and later finding a manuscript titled Memoirs of the Comte de la Fère that contains the names Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. He obtains permission to publish this manuscript as the basis for the story.

The Three Musketeers
The chapter introduces the four main characters and sets the stage for their adventures, highlighting their distinct personalities and the beginning of their friendship.
Chapter 3
The Three Presents of d’Artagnan the Elder
On the first Monday of April 1625, young d'Artagnan arrives in Meung on a comical Béarn pony, bearing a letter of recommendation to M. de Tréville from his father. He is mocked by a mysterious gentleman in a violet doublet, leading to a duel in which d'Artagnan is wounded and his letter stolen. After recovering, he searches for the letter but cannot find it, and the host eventually reveals that the gentleman took it.
Chapter 4
The Antechamber of M. de Tréville
D'Artagnan arrives at the antechamber of M. de Tréville, where he observes the boisterous and irreverent Musketeers. He witnesses fencing games, hears gossip about women and the court, and is shocked by the open mockery of Cardinal Richelieu. He meets Porthos and Aramis, and reflects on his father's warnings about the cardinal, feeling both fear and admiration for the Musketeers' audacity.
Chapter 5
III: The Audience
D'Artagnan meets with Monsieur de Tréville, who initially appears cold but offers him admission to the Royal Academy. Tréville angrily confronts Porthos and Aramis about a recent brawl with the Cardinal's Guards, and Athos enters wounded, revealing the severity of the conflict.
