Retired war hero Richard Hannay is living quietly at Fosse Manor with his wife Mary and son Peter John when he is summoned by Sir Walter Bullivant to investigate a sinister plot. A powerful criminal combine, led by the charming and hypnotic Dominick Medina, has kidnapped three hostages—Adela Victor, Lord Mercot, and young David Warcliff—and plans to murder them by midsummer. Hannay initially refuses but is drawn in after learning of David's plight. He feigns friendship with Medina, enduring hypnotic sessions and close surveillance to gather evidence. With help from his loyal friend Sandy Arbuthnot and his resourceful wife Mary, Hannay uncovers Medina's network of manipulation. The climax shifts to the Scottish Highlands, where Hannay stalks Medina across rugged terrain. After a tense chase, Medina falls to his death from a cliff, and the hostages are freed. Hannay returns to his family, having once again sacrificed his peace for duty.
