Chapter 3
Scene I
Lucentio arrives in Padua with his servant Tranio, eager to study philosophy. They witness Baptista Minola announce that his younger daughter Bianca cannot marry until her elder sister Katharina is wed. Lucentio is instantly smitten with Bianca's beauty and devises a plan to disguise himself as a schoolmaster to woo her, while Tranio will impersonate Lucentio. Meanwhile, Hortensio and Gremio, Bianca's suitors, agree to find a husband for Katharina to clear the way for Bianca's marriage. The scene ends with Christopher Sly commenting on the play from above.
Chapter 4
Scene II
Hortensio tells Petruchio about Katharina, a wealthy but shrewish woman, and Petruchio resolves to woo her. Hortensio reveals that Baptista will not allow Bianca to marry until Katharina is wed. Hortensio and Gremio each plan to disguise themselves as tutors to gain access to Bianca. Lucentio, disguised as Cambio, also enters as a suitor. Petruchio declares he is undaunted by Katharina's temper, and the suitors agree to support his courtship.
