# How does The Sword of Damocles develop the theme of Justice and Mercy?

> The Sword of Damocles by Anna Katharine Green

## Answer

The Sword of Damocles by Anna Katharine Green develops Justice and Mercy across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The book opens with a dedication to the author's father, framing the narrative around principles of justice and mercy. Characters grapple with past sins, seeking forgiveness and redemption, while the plot explores the consequences of moral failings and the possibility of absolution.

The dedication explicitly mentions the principles of justice and mercy as guiding values.

The chapter contrasts the Colonel's harsh justice with the narrator's promise of unconditional mercy.

Mr. Sylvester seeks justice for Jacqueline Japha and refuses to pay blackmail, while also showing mercy by not exposing Holt's crimes.
