# Ponto — The Swiss Family Robinson character guide

> Ponto in The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** The brave Ponto

**First appearance:** 0002-the-swiss-family-robinson

## Snapshot

The brave Ponto, one of the family's faithful dogs, whose steady companionship helps anchor the Robinsons through shipwreck and the uncertain first days ashore.

## Who they are

Ponto belongs to the small circle of loyal animals the family brings from the doomed vessel into their new life, a living thread between the world they lost and the one they must build. Where the father steels himself to set an example of firmness and the mother swallows her tears to encourage the youngest boys, the dogs supply a quieter, wordless courage the children can lean on. In the early arc, Ponto's presence matters less for what he does than for what he steadied: proof that not everything dear has been swept away.
