# Resourcefulness and Innovation in The Survivors

> Theme guide for The Survivors by Tom Godwin.

The colonists use limited materials—wood, stone, animal parts, and even gemstones—to invent weapons, tools, and technology, such as crossbows and aluminum smelting, to overcome their isolation.

## Where it surfaces

- [Chapter II](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_survivors_se/chapters/ii): The development of the automatic crossbow, the pilot smelter, and the training of mockers for undetectable communication demonstrate the colonists' ingenuity.
- [III](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_survivors_se/chapters/iii): Schroeder mines the only iron vein, attempts aluminum smelting, and uses unicorns for transport despite their dangerous nature.
- [IV](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_survivors_se/chapters/iv): The colonists quickly learn to operate the Gern cruiser, using their knowledge from old textbooks and adapting Gern technology to their needs.
