> Karl Schroeder in The Survivors by Tom Godwin.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Fred Schroeder, Fred, the reckless Schroeder

**First appearance:** 0001-the-survivors

## Snapshot

A reckless survivor whose willingness to take chances makes him both useful and dangerous in a colony where every life counts.

## Who they are

Schroeder is known among the survivors for his boldness, a trait that can mean courage or catastrophe on a world as hostile as Ragnarok. His impulsiveness puts him at odds with the careful, coordinated effort the leaders are trying to build. In the early to middle arc, he embodies the tension between individual daring and the discipline the colony needs to survive and eventually strike back.
