## Who they are

Julia is in her compartment when the explosions come, dressing with shaking fingers while her son sleeps and the air regenerators die. She is the reader's first window into the disaster: the fear, the muffled voices, the realization that the Gerns have found them. Her father was second-in-command of the Dunbar expedition that discovered Athena, which ties her personally to the world the survivors are now barred from—and to the knowledge they will need if they ever mean to take it back.
