# Walter — The Survivors of the Chancellor character guide

> Walter in The Survivors of the Chancellor by Jules Verne.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Lieutenant Walter

**First appearance:** 0001-ii

## Snapshot

The Chancellor's loyal lieutenant, quietly carrying out Curtis's whispered orders while the captain hides below and the crew grows restless.

## Who they are

Walter serves as Curtis's right hand in the tense early weeks, summoned for hushed conferences and sent to fetch the boatswain when something is clearly wrong aboard. His terse exchanges with the mate — a shake of the head, a curt reply — suggest a man who knows more than he says and keeps his counsel under pressure. As Huntly withdraws and Curtis assumes command, Walter's steadiness becomes one of the few reliable fixtures in a ship sliding toward disaster.
