# Silas Huntly — The Survivors of the Chancellor character guide

> Silas Huntly in The Survivors of the Chancellor by Jules Verne.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Huntly, John Silas Huntly, Captain Huntly

**First appearance:** 0001-ii

## Snapshot

The Chancellor's captain, whose mind unravels into confusion and dread until he surrenders his command to Curtis rather than face the sea.

## Who they are

Huntly begins the voyage as the ship's unquestioned master but soon withdraws into his cabin, haggard and disoriented, unable to recall the ship's course or name. His confession to Curtis — 'my brain is all in a whirl' — is both pitiable and terrifying, and his voluntary resignation hands the vessel to his mate at the worst possible moment. His breakdown is the first crack in the Chancellor's order, and his absence haunts every decision Curtis must make afterward.
