First appearance: II
As a supporting figure in The Survivors of the Chancellor, Silas Huntly is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Captain of the Chancellor, who hoists sails and navigates the ship out of Charleston harbor.
Huntly begins the voyage as the ship's unquestioned master but soon withdraws into his cabin, haggard and disoriented, unable to recall the ship's course or name. His confession to Curtis — 'my brain is all in a whirl' — is both pitiable and terrifying, and his voluntary resignation hands the vessel to his mate at the worst possible moment. His breakdown is the first crack in the Chancellor's order, and his absence haunts every decision Curtis must make afterward.
