# Owen — The Survivors of the Chancellor character guide

> Owen in The Survivors of the Chancellor by Jules Verne.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0003-iv

## Snapshot

A mutinous sailor whose talk of longboats and every-man-for-himself spreads unrest through the crew long before the Chancellor's real ordeal begins.

## Who they are

Owen is the loudest voice of dissent among the sailors, caught by Kazallon warning his mates that he won't wait until the last minute and hinting darkly about the longboats. His agitation feeds the atmosphere of conspiracy that Curtis must contain, and his later suffering from corrosive poison — refusing even the water that might save him — makes him both victim and warning. He embodies the fracture between crew and officers that runs beneath every other peril of the voyage.
