# Hobart — The Survivors of the Chancellor character guide

> Hobart in The Survivors of the Chancellor by Jules Verne.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** this rascal Hobart

**First appearance:** 0003-iv

## Snapshot

The ship's steward, whose trustworthiness erodes under pressure until even the narrator marks him as a rascal among desperate men.

## Who they are

Hobart occupies the ambiguous middle ground of shipboard life, close enough to the crew to know their moods and close enough to the passengers to be trusted with small duties. As provisions shrink and discipline frays, that position becomes precarious, and the narrator's passing reference to 'this rascal Hobart' signals a man whose allegiance has curdled. His decline mirrors the wider collapse of order aboard the Chancellor, where every role is tested and few hold.
