The Subjection of Women · Concepts
Concepts
Ideas that structure The Subjection of Women by John Stuart Mill — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Legal Subordination of Women
The book argues that the legal and social system that subordinates women to men is fundamentally unjust, comparing it to slavery and calling for its replacement with perfect equality.
Marriage as Bondage
Mill critiques the institution of marriage, describing wives as legal bond-servants with no rights to property, children, or personal autonomy, and argues that marriage is the only remaining legal slavery.
Equality and Justice
The central theme is that justice requires the complete equality of the sexes, rejecting any power or privilege on one side or disability on the other, and advocating for merit-based rather than birth-based authority.
Education and Social Conditioning
Mill argues that perceived differences in mental capacity between men and women are largely the result of unequal education and social conditioning, not inherent nature.
Economic and Occupational Inequality
The book condemns the exclusion of women from lucrative occupations and public functions, arguing it wastes half of humanity's talent and is both unjust and detrimental to society.
Tyranny of Custom and Feeling
Mill identifies deeply rooted custom and emotional prejudice, rather than rational argument, as the main obstacles to women's emancipation, noting that such feelings resist logical refutation.
