The Story of Gösta Berling · Concepts
Concepts
Ideas that structure The Story of Gösta Berling by Selma Lagerlöf — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Redemption and Penitence
The narrative follows Gösta Berling and other characters who seek redemption for past sins through suffering and self-sacrifice, as seen in Countess Elizabeth's voluntary penance and Gösta's struggle to overcome his destructive tendencies.
Duality of Human Nature
Characters embody both noble and base qualities, such as Gösta's charm and genius contrasted with his alcoholism and recklessness, and the pensioners' capacity for both joy and despair.
Nature and the Supernatural
The wild Värmland landscape is depicted as both beautiful and malevolent, inhabited by supernatural forces like the devil appearing at Christmas Eve and the bear that requires a silver bullet, reflecting the characters' inner turmoil.
Social Class and Power
The rigid class structure of early 19th-century Sweden is explored through the pensioners' dependence on the major's wife, the Broby clergyman's poverty, and the contrast between wealthy ironworks owners and destitute peasants.
Love and Sacrifice
Romantic love drives characters to both self-destruction and selflessness, exemplified by Marianne Sinclair's forbidden kiss with Gösta, Countess Elizabeth's confession to save him, and Anna Stjärnhök's arranged marriage.
Alcoholism and Escapism
Drinking is a central motif, serving as both a social ritual and a means of escaping harsh realities, as shown by Gösta's dismissal from the priesthood and the pensioners' carousing in the smithy.
Guilt and Remorse
Characters are haunted by past actions, such as Captain Lennart's war trauma, the Broby clergyman's avarice, and Gösta's role in the captain's death, leading to psychological torment and attempts at atonement.
Community and Belonging
The pensioners at Ekeby form a surrogate family bound by shared revelry and misfortune, while outcasts like the gypsies and the Broby clergyman's daughter highlight the pain of social exclusion.
Fate and Free Will
The narrative questions whether characters are doomed by fate or can choose their paths, as seen in the curse on Borg manor, the pensioners' pact with the devil, and Gösta's repeated decisions to reform or relapse.
