## Snapshot

The rich and domineering ironmaster of Björne, he rules his household and his daughter with the same iron certainty he brings to his forges.

## Who they are

As one of Värmland's great ironmasters, Melchior Sinclair commands wealth, influence, and the obedience of everyone around him, including his formidable daughter Marianne. His pride in his name and his iron grip on family affairs make him a natural adversary for the rootless pensioners of Ekeby, whose whole way of life mocks his order. He matters because his refusal to bend—whether toward his daughter's will or toward the changing times—sets the terms of the conflicts that shape the novel's middle chapters.
