# Marianne Sinclair — The Story of Gösta Berling character guide

> Marianne Sinclair in The Story of Gösta Berling by Selma Lagerlöf.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Marianne, Miss Marianne, the beautiful Marianne, the sensible Marianne

**First appearance:** 0010-part-i-vi-the-ball-at-ekeby

## Snapshot

The proud, brilliant daughter of Värmland's richest ironmaster, she is cursed with an icy self-awareness that mocks her own passions even as she surrenders to them.

## Who they are

Beautiful, wealthy, and feared for her sharp tongue, Marianne Sinclair moves through society as a woman who watches herself perform every emotion rather than feeling it. A single night of genuine passion shatters that cold spectatorship, but the smallpox that follows leaves her disfigured and alone with her introspection. Her divided self—half sneering observer, half woman starving for real life—makes her the novel's most modern and unsettling figure, and her fate is bound up with Gösta's from the start.
