# Cousin Christopher — The Story of Gösta Berling character guide

> Cousin Christopher in The Story of Gösta Berling by Selma Lagerlöf.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Christopher, the slow Cousin Christopher

**First appearance:** 0018-part-ii-i-cousin-christopher

## Snapshot

A slow-witted but loyal pensioner whose simple heart and willing hands make him a gentle fixture of the cavaliers' rowdy brotherhood.

## Who they are

Cousin Christopher is the butt of jokes among the sharper men at Ekeby, but his simplicity is not foolishness so much as a kind of moral steadiness. He follows where the others lead, drinks when they drink, and never schemes, which makes him oddly trustworthy in a household of charming rogues. He matters because he shows the reader what the cavaliers look like from below, and because his uncomplicated loyalty quietly indicts the cleverness of men who know better.
