# Jip — The Story of Doctor Dolittle character guide > Jip in The Story of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** And Jip **First appearance:** 0002-i-puddleby ## Snapshot The Doctor's faithful dog, whose sharp nose and sharper loyalty make him the first to follow Dolittle out of Puddleby and into danger. ## Who they are Jip is one of the Doctor's five favorite pets, a dog who stays close whether his master is tending sick animals on the lawn or losing his last patients to a hedgehog on the sofa. Where the household grumbles, Jip simply follows, and his keen sense of smell becomes a practical tool once the journey turns strange. He matters because he embodies the quiet, unquestioning devotion that Dolittle's animal family offers in place of the human society that has abandoned him. ## Relationships ### [Doctor Dolittle](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_story_of_doctor_dolittle_se/characters/doctor_dolittle) _friendship_ Jip is Doctor Dolittle's loyal and brave dog, accompanying him on adventures. ### [Dab-Dab](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_story_of_doctor_dolittle_se/characters/dab_dab) _friendship_ Dab-Dab and Jip are fellow animal companions who live and travel together with Doctor Dolittle. ### [Gub-Gub](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_story_of_doctor_dolittle_se/characters/gub_gub) _friendship_ Gub-Gub and Jip are fellow animal companions who often interact playfully. ### [Doctor Dolittle](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_story_of_doctor_dolittle_se/characters/doctor_dolittle) _friendship_ Jip is Doctor Dolittle's loyal and brave dog, accompanying him on adventures. ### [Doctor Dolittle](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_story_of_doctor_dolittle_se/characters/doctor_dolittle) _friendship_ Jip is Doctor Dolittle's loyal and brave dog, accompanying him on adventures. ### [Dab-Dab](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_story_of_doctor_dolittle_se/characters/dab_dab) _friendship_ Dab-Dab and Jip are fellow animal companions who live and travel together with Doctor Dolittle. ### [Gub-Gub](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_story_of_doctor_dolittle_se/characters/gub_gub) _friendship_ Gub-Gub and Jip are fellow animal companions who often interact playfully. ### [Gub-Gub](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_story_of_doctor_dolittle_se/characters/gub_gub) _friendship_ Gub-Gub and Jip are fellow animal companions who often interact playfully. ## In the story ### [Puddleby](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_story_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/i-puddleby) Mentioned as one of the Doctor's favorite pets, a dog. ### [Animal Language](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_story_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/ii-animal-language) Demonstrates dog communication by twitching his nose to ask a question. ### [More Money Troubles](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_story_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/iii-more-money-troubles) Sweeps the floors with a rag tied to his tail, finding the task amusing. ### [A Message from Africa](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_story_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/iv-a-message-from-africa) Listed among the animals the Doctor will take to Africa. ### [VII: The Bridge of Apes](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_story_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/vii-the-bridge-of-apes) Comments on the steep cliff, saying 'Golly!
