# Ben Ali — The Story of Doctor Dolittle character guide

> Ben Ali in The Story of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0016-xv-the-barbary-dragon

## Snapshot

A Barbary pirate captain whose ferocity on the high seas makes him the Doctor's most dangerous obstacle between Puddleby and a cure.

## Who they are

Ben Ali rules the waters the Doctor's voyage must cross, a pirate whose reputation alone is enough to make sailors change course. He is the story's blunt instrument of menace — greedy, quick to violence, and utterly unimpressed by a country doctor with a shipload of talking animals. His presence turns Dolittle's journey from a whimsical errand into a genuine test of nerve, forcing the Doctor to rely on his wits and his animal crew rather than any authority.
