## Snapshot

One half of the efficient young couple who replaced Starvel's ageing servants, she keeps house for a miser while quietly resenting her mistress's poverty.

## Who they are

Mrs. Roper arrives at Starvel with her husband to run the household after the old servants leave, and Ruth Averill takes to neither of them. Her competence is real, but so is the unease she stirs in the lonely niece who reads to Simon Averill each day. When the tragedy at the hollow shatters the household, her knowledge of its daily rhythms makes her a figure the investigation cannot ignore.
