## Snapshot

The Thirsby doctor whose name surfaces in a confession too monstrous to be true and too dangerous to be ignored.

## Who they are

Philpot is a respectable physician with an Edinburgh degree and a quiet practice, yet a written confession of murder bearing his name falls into Roper's hands, and French cannot decide whether it is genuine, forged, or the lever of a blackmail. Gossip about gambling debts and a career that shifted abruptly after 1921 only thickens the question. His ambiguous guilt shadows the investigation long before French can prove or dismiss it.
