Before she can leave, tragedy strikes: Starvel Hollow House burns down, killing her uncle, the Ropers, and her friend Markham Giles. Ruth is devastated by the loss of the only people she knew well.

II: The Inquest
Ruth Averill awakens after the fire with a mix of horror and hope, comforted by Mrs. Oxley and learning from Mr. Oxley that she will inherit some money. She buys mourning clothes and prepares for the inquest, where she gives evidence about her uncle's health, the household arrangements, and the Ropers' sobriety. Dr. Emerson testifies that the bodies found correspond to Mr. Averill and the Ropers, and notes that Dr. Philpot is ill and unable to attend.

Mr. Tarkington Develops a Theory
After the inquest, Ruth feels a sense of relief but is troubled by a change in Pierce Whymper's manner. Mr. Oxley reveals that most of Mr. Averill's fortune, kept in cash in his safe, has been destroyed in the fire, leaving Ruth with only about £2,400. She plans to train for secretarial work in London but delays her departure, hoping to resolve her relationship with Whymper. Weeks later, Mr. Tarkington visits Mr. Oxley with a disturbing new theory about the Starvel Hollow fire.
