Chapter 1
Part I: The Narrative of Lieutenant von Belke (Of the German Navy)
Lieutenant von Belke recounts his mission to land on a British island, spy on the Grand Fleet, and signal a German submarine flotilla. After his motorcycle breaks down in salt water, he encounters a suspicious farmer, meets a man named Tiel at the manse, and learns Tiel's story of impersonation. Von Belke successfully observes the fleet and gives the signal, but is later captured and his betrayal revealed.
Chapter 2
I: The Landing
German Lieutenant von Belke lands by submarine on a British island to spy on the Grand Fleet. He brings a motor-bicycle, but after a difficult start across rough terrain, the motorcycle breaks down due to salt water damage from the landing.
Chapter 3
II: Night in the Ruined House
Von Belke's motorcycle breaks down due to salt water damage, stranding him on the island. He pushes the bike to a ruined farmhouse, repairs it, and decides to hide there until midday. While smoking and deliberating his next move, he sees smoke rising from a chimney of a nearby building, signaling unexpected company.
Chapter 4
III: Behind the Wall
Von Belke, having escaped the suspicious old woman, adopts a strategy of trusting to luck and riding slowly to avoid attention. He hides behind a low wall by the sea, observing the peaceful landscape and contemplating the irony of war. After hours of solitude, he encounters a sinister old woman who questions him about his presence and accuses him of being a foreigner. Forced to flee, he devises a plan to zigzag across the island to confuse pursuers, ultimately deciding to return to the same road from which he came, relying on luck and a cool demeanor to evade capture.
Chapter 5
IV: The Nails
Von Belke encounters a suspicious farmer who signals to a motorcyclist pursuer. He escapes by using a ruse, then throws nails to disable the pursuer's motorcycle and cuts a telegraph wire. He later observes the Grand Fleet's gunnery practice from a hidden vantage point near his rendezvous.
