# Racial Injustice in The Sport of the Gods

> Theme guide for The Sport of the Gods by Paul Laurence Dunbar.

The book exposes the deep-seated racial prejudice in both the South and the North, as Berry Hamilton is falsely accused of theft and imprisoned based on his race, while the white Oakley family's honor is protected despite the truth.

## Where it surfaces

- [III: The Theft](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_sport_of_the_gods_se/chapters/iii-the-theft): Maurice Oakley's assumption that 'no servant is beyond suspicion' and his speech about Black ambition reflect systemic racial prejudice that frames Berry Hamilton as guilty before any proof.
- [From a Clear Sky](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_sport_of_the_gods_se/chapters/iv-from-a-clear-sky): Berry's arrest on flimsy evidence, despite years of loyal service, illustrates the systemic racial injustice that allows a white employer to condemn a Black servant without proof.
- [V: The Justice of Men](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_sport_of_the_gods_se/chapters/v-the-justice-of-men): Berry Hamilton is convicted despite lack of evidence, his former good name ignored; the community's presumption of guilt is rooted in racial prejudice.
- [VI: Outcasts](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_sport_of_the_gods_se/chapters/vi-outcasts): The Hamiltons are collectively punished for Berry's alleged crime, facing discrimination and exclusion from employment and housing despite their innocence.
- [XIII: The Oakleys](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_sport_of_the_gods_se/chapters/xiii-the-oakleys): Berry Hamilton's innocence is irrelevant to the Oakleys; his suffering is dismissed because of his race, highlighting the devaluation of Black lives.
- [XVII: A Yellow Journal](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_sport_of_the_gods_se/chapters/xvii-a-yellow-journal): Berry Hamilton's wrongful conviction and five-year imprisonment highlight the systemic racism in the Southern legal system, where a Black man suffers for a white man's crime.
