# How does The Sport of the Gods develop the theme of Family Disintegration?

> The Sport of the Gods by Paul Laurence Dunbar

## Answer

The Sport of the Gods by Paul Laurence Dunbar develops Family Disintegration across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The Hamilton family, once stable and loving in the South, is torn apart by false accusations, migration, and the corrupting influences of the city, resulting in separation, estrangement, and tragedy.

The chapter introduces the close-knit Hamilton family, setting up a contrast with the disintegration that later occurs.

The Hamilton family fractures under the pressures of urban life: Joe abandons his mother and sister, Kitty becomes secretive and rebellious, and Mrs. Hamilton loses her husband's support from prison.

The Oakley family's unity is built on a lie; Francis's confession and the subsequent cover-up reveal the moral decay at the family's core.
