Kitty is the daughter whose full, rich voice charms the family's new acquaintance Mr. Thomas, and whose shy girlishness makes her mother uneasy about the company they are keeping. Where Joe hardens, Kitty adapts, drawn to the theatre's glamour and flattered by attention she is too inexperienced to read clearly. Her slow drift from her mother's protection into the orbit of men who admire her is the quiet tragedy running beneath the family's struggle to survive.
