## Who they are

Pan-Chao answers Major Noltitz's questions about the dead mandarin and the sealed van with the courtesy of a well-bred traveler, though he knows nothing of the treasure hidden aboard. When Kinko faces a pitiless magistrate, Pan-Chao pleads his case with impassioned eloquence, arguing that the acrobat's courage saved the imperial gold. His loyalty to the group and his fluency in the Celestial Empire's ways make him the bridge between the foreign travelers and the country they are crossing.
