# Versh — The Sound and the Fury character guide

> Versh in The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Jason Versh

**First appearance:** 0000-april-seventh-1928

## Snapshot

Dilsey's son, who once dressed and watched over the young Compson children, his patient hands shaping their earliest memories of being cared for.

## Who they are

Versh belongs to the earlier generation of Dilsey's family, the one that raised the Compson children while their own mother kept to her room. In the childhood sections he is the steady presence who buttons coats, warns against the cold, and absorbs the children's whims without complaint. His quiet labor establishes the pattern the novel keeps returning to: the Black household sustaining a white family that cannot sustain itself.
