# Shreve MacKenzie — The Sound and the Fury character guide

> Shreve MacKenzie in The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Shreve, Mr. MacKenzie

**First appearance:** 0001-june-second-1910

## Snapshot

Quentin's Canadian roommate at Harvard, an easygoing outsider whose mild curiosity draws out the confessions Quentin cannot stop making.

## Who they are

Shreve shares Quentin's Cambridge room, padding across the floor in slippers while Quentin lies listening to his grandfather's watch. He is genial, unhaunted, and largely uncomprehending of the Southern obsessions Quentin carries north with him, which makes him the perfect ear for Quentin's looping disclosures. His ordinariness throws Quentin's torment into relief and gives the Harvard section its second voice, a patient witness to a mind coming apart.
