> Quentin Compson in The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Mr. Quentin, Quentin Compson

**First appearance:** 0001-june-second-1910

## Snapshot

A Harvard freshman from Mississippi who cannot stop hearing his grandfather's watch tick, Quentin Compson is a young man trying to live by an honor code no one around him believes in.

## Who they are

Quentin is the eldest Compson son, sent north to Harvard on money the family can barely spare, and he is consumed by his sister Caddy's sexuality and his own inability to protect or possess her. His father has taught him that time conquers everything and that virginity is a fiction men invented, and Quentin cannot decide whether to believe him or defy him. His long, circling day in Cambridge is the novel's second movement, and his obsession with Caddy drives the book's central wound.
