# Luster — The Sound and the Fury character guide

> Luster in The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Dar Luster

**First appearance:** 0000-april-seventh-1928

## Snapshot

Dilsey's grandson, caught between chores and mischief, who dresses Benjy, chases jaybirds with rocks, and mutters that it isn't Monday yet.

## Who they are

Luster works the Compson kitchen under Dilsey's sharp hand, fetching wood, dodging blame, and minding Benjy through the long present-day Saturday. He is boyish and evasive, innocent-faced when caught in the cellar, yet tender enough to be entrusted with a grown man's care. His small rebellions and running commentary give the novel's present its pulse, showing how the old order's labor now falls on a generation that never chose it.
