Artistic Ambition and Sacrifice
The novel follows Thea Kronborg's relentless pursuit of an artistic career, showing the personal sacrifices, isolation, and single-minded dedication required to become a great opera singer.
Self-Discovery and Identity
Thea's journey from a small Colorado town to international fame is a process of discovering her true self, separating her own desires from the expectations of family and community.
The Role of Place and Environment
The stark landscapes of Moonstone, the Mexican quarter, the canyons of the Southwest, and the cultural centers of Chicago and New York all shape Thea's character and artistic development.
Class and Social Mobility
Thea's rise from a modest, provincial background to the heights of the opera world highlights the tensions between social class, ambition, and the transformative power of talent.
Gender and Independence
Thea navigates a male-dominated world, asserting her independence and rejecting conventional roles for women, while forming complex relationships with men who both support and constrain her.
The Nature of Talent and Genius
The book explores what constitutes true artistic talent—its raw, innate quality, the discipline needed to develop it, and the mysterious, almost impersonal force it exerts on the artist.
Community and Alienation
Thea's growth creates distance from her family and hometown, yet she remains connected to figures like Dr. Archie and Spanish Johnny, illustrating the tension between belonging and the loneliness of artistic pursuit.
The Past and Cultural Heritage
References to ancient pottery, Mexican music, and family history (e.g., her grandfather's oboe) emphasize how the past and diverse cultural traditions enrich and inform the artist's vision.
