# Dr. Howard Archie — The Song of the Lark character guide > Dr. Howard Archie in The Song of the Lark by Willa Cather. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Dr. Archie, Archie, Howard Archie **First appearance:** 0003-i ## Snapshot Moonstone's unhappily married physician, he recognizes something rare in Thea before anyone else does and quietly becomes the patron of her ambition. ## Who they are Dr. Archie is the doctor everyone in Moonstone trusts and the man whose own marriage has gone sour in a way he never quite names aloud. He is drawn to Thea not romantically but with a kind of quixotic faith — he sees her gift clearly and keeps finding ways to fund it, defend it, and push her toward Denver and beyond. His steady, unglamorous devotion gives the novel its moral center: the quiet adult who believes in a child's future enough to spend himself on it. ## Relationships ### [Thea Kronborg](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_song_of_the_lark_se/characters/thea_kronborg) _friendship_ Dr. Archie is a kind, protective mentor and father figure to Thea, offering support and encouragement throughout her life. ### [Fred Ottenburg](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_song_of_the_lark_se/characters/fred_ottenburg) _friendship_ Dr. Archie and Fred share a mutual respect and friendship, often discussing Thea's welfare and career with genuine concern. ### [Mrs. Kronborg](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_song_of_the_lark_se/characters/mrs_kronborg) _friendship_ Dr. Archie and Mrs. Kronborg share a respectful friendship, often consulting each other about Thea's health and future. ### [Thea Kronborg](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_song_of_the_lark_se/characters/thea_kronborg) _friendship_ Dr. Archie is a kind, protective mentor and father figure to Thea, offering support and encouragement throughout her life. ### [Thea Kronborg](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_song_of_the_lark_se/characters/thea_kronborg) _friendship_ Dr. Archie is a kind, protective mentor and father figure to Thea, offering support and encouragement throughout her life. ### [Fred Ottenburg](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_song_of_the_lark_se/characters/fred_ottenburg) _friendship_ Dr. Archie and Fred share a mutual respect and friendship, often discussing Thea's welfare and career with genuine concern. ### [Fred Ottenburg](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_song_of_the_lark_se/characters/fred_ottenburg) _friendship_ Dr. Archie and Fred share a mutual respect and friendship, often discussing Thea's welfare and career with genuine concern. ### [Mrs. Kronborg](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_song_of_the_lark_se/characters/mrs_kronborg) _friendship_ Dr. Archie and Mrs. Kronborg share a respectful friendship, often consulting each other about Thea's health and future. ## In the story ### [The Song of the Lark](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_song_of_the_lark_se/chapters/the-song-of-the-lark) Reunites with Thea and listens to her confession about her career and personal sacrifices. ### [Part I: Friends of Childhood](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_song_of_the_lark_se/chapters/part-i-friends-of-childhood) A family friend and early supporter of Thea. ### [I](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_song_of_the_lark_se/chapters/i) Delivers Mrs. Kronborg's baby, then discovers and treats Thea's pneumonia;
