## Who they are

Sitka Charley is the staff the expedition leans on — rigid, unreadable, moving through the line of stragglers to lift sinking hearts and assess which men are worth saving. When two Indians desert the white man Joe and draw their hunting knives against his order, Charley does not flinch; he beats them back with the butt of his rifle and returns them to the leash like beaten dogs. That night he delivers his law in the Indians' own tongue, counting the cups of flour and promising death to anyone who breaks the trail again.
