## Who they are

Madeline is an Indian woman who has escaped the heavy burdens and trail toil of her people's women, and the men of the camp see in her a grace not yet realized. Malemute Kid, Stanley Prince, and Lucky Jack Harrington set about training her with the businesslike rigor of athletes preparing for a contest, Prince waltzing her round and round the cramped cabin while Harrington scrapes his violin. To her half-barbaric mind, Malemute Kid can do no wrong; she believes the wisdom of the ages centers in him, and that between his vision and the future no veil can intervene.
