Edwin Bentham is one of the strange waifs the gold rush drags north—indolent, vain, and utterly dependent on the wife who flatters him into pretending he leads. On the trail he follows in the rear while Grace breaks snow in advance, reversing only when strangers appear, so his manhood stays virgin to every passerby. His selfish crybaby cowardice, glossed with skin-deep culture, makes him a quiet study in the kind of man the Northland exposes and the kind of marriage it grinds down.
